POTENSI ASAM LEMAK OMEGA-3 MINYAK IKAN LEMURU DALAM MENGHAMBAT RESORPSI TULANG *)

ABSTRACT

Bone resorption is the process by which osteoclasts break down bone. It is occurs because the number and activity of osteoclast is higher than osteoblast. The increase osteoclast activity is influenced by proinflammatory cytokines and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2). Lemuru oil is extracted from the waste byproduct of fishmeal and lemuru fish canning. The utilization of lemuru oil is not optimal. In fact, omega-3 fatty acids of lemuru oil contains 18% eicosapentaenoid acid (EPA) and 13% docohexaenoic acid (DHA) are beneficial on health. Dietary intake of omega-3 fatty acids may reduce the production of proinflammatory cytokines and PGE2 by replacing arachidonic acid (AA), which is a substrate eikosanoids and inhibit the metabolism of the AA. In addition, omega-3 fatty acids can alter gene expression through the activity of cytokine mRNA transcription factor that can decrease the  production of proinflammatory cytokines and PGE2. This decline can lead to the formation and activity of the osteoclast is disturbed, thus increasing osteoclast apoptosis. Omega-3 fatty acids also decrease the expression of osteopontin and increase of bone sialoprotein that can enhance osteoblast differentiation in bone formation. In conclusion, omega-3 fatty acids of lemuru oil with the content of EPA and DHA has the potential to inhibit bone resorption.
